Healthy Taco Swaps

dinner recipes recipes tips and tricks Jan 07, 2022

Tacos are a staple in my house and usually a family favorite! Here are a few ways to make them better for you!

Use leaner ground beef or swap for turkey or chicken. 80/20 ground beef is high in saturated fat, by using a leaner cut of meat even 90/10 you can cut down the saturated fat significantly, about half to be exact. 80/20 beef has 23g of fat per serving and 90/10 has about 11g per serving.

Opt for corn tortillas instead of flour or crispy shells. Corn tortillas are made from whole grain and are typically less processed than white flour tortillas. They are also lower in fat than crispy shells, their fried counterparts. They are also naturally gluten-free!

Add avocado! Avocado has a ton of health benefits and it is a healthy source of fat. You can make it even more flavorful by adding other flavors to it. I like to make guac with tomatoes, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and lots of seasoning. Using guacamole in place of cheese and sour cream will help reduce the amount of saturated fat and increase the nutritional content by getting in some heart-healthy fats!

Add fresh ingredients. Chop up some fresh toppings like tomato, onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and add a variety of hot sauce options! These are minimal calories and will add a TON of flavor!

Here are some of my favorite ingredients for when I am making tacos:

Corn Tortillas

93/7 ground beef or I use a Pork Shoulder Roast (see how I used this 4 ways here)

I have 2 favorite hot sauces.  Green Tabasco and this Taqueria one.

Then I have avocado, tomato, onion, and fresh cilantro!
